They have a battery and a preamp built into the pickup, so no need to mod your guitar. If you raise your budget to $150 or so, you can find active magnetic pickups that still have the clip-on benefits - Baggs M1A (although it is super sensitive to any top noise), Duncan Mag Mic, and others. A $400 Sunrise would have the same problem. If you don't protect the pickup from the DI somehow, odds are your tone will sound like cardboard. This can be fixed for cheap with any well-buffered guitar pedal (if you have a clean buffer you aren't using, put it to work here). Lots of stages have inexpensive transformer DI boxes that will choke the life out of the gentle high-impedance signal. That said, any passive pickup (UST, soundboard, or magnetic) is going to have nasty impedance issues with a lot of PA equipment.
